Momel, the blogger I have christened The Bovine Scatologist, over at The Blahg of Bullshit suggested that I visit his Mistress of the Universe's blog if I wanted to learn how to write creatively. When I was a little girl I thought I wanted to be a writer - a novelist, among a long list of other things (veterinarian, interior decorator, fashion designer, teacher, I think firefighter was in there, too, at one point) and went so far as to plant a stack of paper next to our rickety old typewriter and sit myself down in front of it to write a book. Clickety-clickety-clackety...ding! Aw crap, where's the correction fluid? This was short-lived to say the least.
I was reminded of this ephemeral childhood fantasy when Momel made this suggestion, so I popped on over there to see what was up. Jessica Zafra's Lit Wit Challenge 4.3 theme is Metamorphosis: In 1,000 words write a story in which the protagonist wakes up and finds herself/himself transformed into an animal, plant, or object.
I am currently tossing around the idea of a congenitally (and severely) disfigured child who may also be dying from some unrelated disease (must be some really bad fuku) who wakes up in her hospital room to discover she has morphed into a fly. As a literal fly on the wall, she is able to hear what her parents and other people say about her and her condition. I don't know. That's all I've thought up so far. Creative suggestions from you, dear reader, are welcome! =) Help a sister out.
*My use of the word fuku is an allusion to the book The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz, which I have recently finished reading, and which I loved. Read it if you haven't yet!
I read that Sigmund Freud would have his patients lie on his couch and exercise what he called 'free association'. He would have them speak of anything that came to mind, as a way to let the contents of the subconscious, thoughts normally suppressed, surface and communicate with the consciousness. Lying in bed yesterday afternoon I tried it for a few minutes. This is what surfaced (after some editing).
Two books currently on my nightstand include Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass and Jostein Gaarder’s Sophie’s World which may explain the nature of some of the content.
If you find poetry or the imitation of it tedious (as I usually do), just skip this post.
I've always been one of those people who likes to be prepared. Knowledge is power, I say. The best way that I learn is to study theory and then practice (repeatedly) til perfection. If you're anything like me and like instructional videos, here's one you might find useful. Exercise caution when climbing over the gearshift.
I think that if all singles adopted the regular practice of full disclosure it would spare both parties the aggravation of trying to decipher the other's motives. If intentions are clear from the very beginning, neither party is liable for (what would otherwise be) inevitable disillusionment. For example, upon seeing an attractive girl, a guy could walk up and say,
"Hi, I'm not looking for a relationship right now, but I think you're pretty hot and I would really like to (expletive) you, and if it's good, (expletive) you repeatedly. So if you're interested in the same, here's my number. If you're not interested and are completely offended, please don't slap me (my friends over there are watching) I just thought it was worth a shot."
Or, as the case may be:
"Hi, I'm looking to find true love and the future mother of my children, and I believe that between our equally ridiculous good looks, notable athletic ability, and your superior intelligence, our offspring would have a considerable genetic advantage over everyone else's little second-rate rugrats. Whaddya say we find out if you're the one to help me breed superior beings?"
Sure, it would take a little getting used to as people aren't generally accustomed to brutal honesty. But I think it would work out for the best in the long run. No confusion. No 'Does he want something serious or does he just want to f*** me?' No trichotillomania-inducing exasperation. Less moping about in pajamas, eating Spam out of the can, lip-syncing to Sheena Easton on 96.3 W Rock, thinking 'Why hasn't hecalled? Huhuhu.' (Just so we're clear, that is so not me...huhuhu.)
See ya next time Full Disclosurists! (Yes, I made that word up.)
